Through the centuries, the Israelites told of God’s mighty works in delivering their people from the oppression of the Egyptians. This image continues that pursuit in a visual format. Starting at the bottom of the painting, we see the setting of harsh Egyptian slavery (the pyramids, bricks, and cracking whip) and the hope of a redeemer (the burning bush and the staff that turned into a snake). A pyramid of diamonds portrays the ten plagues in order, with the dreaded death of the Egyptian firstborn at the pinnacle. On the same latitude as the final plague, to demonstrate what was happening on the first Passover evening, we see Jews in their homes eating their meal with staffs in hand, ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Centrally located in the upper portion of the image is the mighty miracle of the Red Sea parting, with the people walking through on dry ground. The waves envelope the Egyptian soldiers and horses.
For the whole story, read the first fifteen chapters of the book of Exodus.
