The Prodigal Son

Andrew Lindberg
The Prodigal Son

Jesus once told the story of a foolish young man who was so unhappy in his father’s house that he desired to fracture the family and leave. He asked his father for his inheritance and then went off to a distant country and squandered his newfound wealth on wild living. When all of his money dried up and his partying friends deserted him, he could only find meager employment feeding local pigs. He was so destitute, he longed to eat what the pigs were eating! And in that moment, the young man came to his senses and determined to return to his father, hoping that he would be received as a servant in the home. But when he approached the home, his father saw him from a long way off and ran to his lost son and embraced him. He ordered his servants to get a new robe, a new ring, and new sandals, and to kill the fattened calf so they could celebrate as a family. However, the young man’s older brother looked upon the whole scene with hatred and envy. This parable is a beautiful portrayal of the love of God for rebellious and repentant children. It is also a sobering warning for self-righteous sons and daughters who are envious of the grace God gives to sinners.

See chapter 15 of Luke’s gospel for the whole story.
