Sometimes we shy away from following God. His plans for us seem too grand, too hard, or too unbelievable. Gideon reacted in this way when God called him to be a judge for the Israelites and his story is told in this image. The angel of the LORD came to Gideon while he was threshing wheat near an oak tree. Gideon’s first mission, accepted reluctantly, was to destroy his father’s altar to Baal. In his fear, he accomplished it at night. Gideon’s fame spread, but he was still timid about his call from God. He asked for specific leading through a miracle of fleece and dew. God stilled his fears but then added to them! To show His might and power, God whittled down the Israelite army until it would need a miracle greater than the fleece for victory! By unusual methods, a mighty victory was achieved, with God receiving the glory for it.
See the book of Judges, chapters 6, 7, and 8 for the full story.
I hope that this image will be a reminder to you of the truth of God’s Word, His strength working on our behalf, and His persistence in employing us even when we are resistant to His call.
