The Woman at the Well

Andrew Lindberg
The Woman at the Well

During His travels through Samaria, Jesus met a woman who was drawing water in the heat of the day.  He struck up a far-ranging conversation with her that touched on worship, family, and who He was.  When Jesus revealed His knowledge of her husbands and romantic relationships, her reaction showed that He had touched a nerve.  With gentleness, patience, and love, Jesus drew the woman close to Him as she was drawing the water.  In this image, the black and white area depicts the narrative conversation between Jesus and the woman, with an interpretive focus on the woman’s husbands throughout her life.  I envisioned that her lovers may have included a youthful indiscretion, a young but true love, an unfaithful man, an abuser, and lastly, a drunkard.  It is altogether likely that her loves went from bad to worse as she built up her “reputation.”  The colorful area shows the transformation in outlook and spiritual life that came into the woman as she partook of the living water that Jesus offered her.
