Mary and Martha

Mary and Martha

Three times Mary and Martha appear in the Scriptures.  Three times, each woman is seen doing the same action.  First, Martha is actively preparing for Jesus to be her guest, while Mary is listening at His feet.  When their brother Lazarus dies, Martha runs to meet Jesus as He comes into town.  When Mary meets Jesus, she collapses at His feet and pours out her heart to Him.  After the Lord raises Lazarus from the dead, we see Martha once again serving a celebratory meal, while Mary wipes Jesus’ feet with her perfume and hair.  Each situation paints a picture of who Mary and Martha were at their core:  one actively serving Christ, the other drawn to humble worship.  Both are good examples for us to follow, but one is better, as Jesus Himself said.

For the whole story, read Luke 10:38-42, John 11, and John 12:1-8.

I hope that this image will be a reminder to you of the tender love God has for His disciples, His power over the grave, and our responses to Him that bring pleasure to His heart.
