“Jesus” is meant to extol the glories of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Cruciform in composition, this painting recounts the miracles, the nature, and the redeeming work of the Savior. Displayed here are miracles such as turning the water into wine and multiplying the loaves and the fish, and demonstrations of His zeal in overturning the money changers’ tables and suffering on the cross. Vertically through the center of the image, stand four snapshots of a salvation timeline: the Lord’s crown of thorns, His empty tomb, His ascension into glory, and His coming return. Jesus called Himself the Vine, the Good Shepherd, and the Gate through which the righteous may approach God. Of special importance is the allusion to 1 Peter 1:18-19, where we read that “it was not perishable things such as silver and gold that you were redeemed,” but with “the precious blood of Christ.”
