Joseph’s life story is a sweeping narrative that fills a quarter of the book of Genesis. Early in his life he was victimized by favoritism that led to contempt, betrayal that led to slavery, and unlawful desire that led to imprisonment. Yet the hand of God is seen working through all these trials to save the offspring of Abraham and make them a nation, which Joseph himself recognized. This image contains many elements of Joseph’s story, including his sojourn into Egypt, the episode with Potiphar’s wife and subsequent shackling, his rise to power, his plan to store up grain for years of famine, and the cup he placed in Benjamin’s sack of grain that reunited Jacob’s family. A common thread woven through the whole composition is his coat of many colors.

I hope that this image will be a reminder to you of the truth of God’s Word, His intention that all suffering will work out for our good and His glory, and His use of ordinary, faithful people to bring about His plans.
