Elijah's ministry as a prophet of God brought him into sharp disagreement with King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel. After telling Ahab of a coming drought, Elijah was told by the Lord to go into hiding. Elijah found God's provision and sustenance at a far-away brook, where ravens fed him. When the brook dried up because of the drought, God sent Elijah to a foreign widow. While at her house, the Lord provided Elijah, the widow, and her son with a never-ending supply of flour and oil in their time of need. Three years later, Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal, Ahab's prophets, on Mount Carmel. There, God displayed His awesome power over the prophets of Baal by igniting Elijah's water-drenched sacrifice. These three episodes are displayed in ascending order in the painting, bringing the viewer's eyes to the top of composition, where the final moment of Elijah's time on earth is depicted: he was taken up into heaven by God in a whirlwind with a chariot of fire.

See 1 Kings, chapters 17-18 and 2 Kings, chapter 2.
